Terceira Lajes is a Portuguese Air Force base located on the island of Terceira in the Azores, serving as a NATO military installation. It was established in 1943 during World War II and has since become a key strategic location for the United States and its NATO allies, especially during the Cold War. Today, it is primarily used for logistics, training, and refueling activities by the US and NATO forces, as well as hosting various military exercises and joint operations. Its runway is one of the largest in Europe, capable of servicing even the largest military transport aircraft like the C-5 Galaxy and the Antonov An-124 Ruslan. Despite its military importance, Terceira Lajes also serves as a commercial airport, providing direct flights to several destinations in Europe and North America.
